NDP ad backfires with use of wrong gun

November 29, 2011

Make no mistake about it.  The NDP do not understand firearms.  The NDP does not believe in the right to own a firearm for any reason at all.  They will grit their teeth and lie to appease old socialsts in rural areas if needed.  These people absolutey hate you for owning a gun.  These people believe that if you own a gun you are automatically a danger to them.  These people will not be happy until we are all as helpless in life as they are.

The NDP are switching guns as they come out firing at the Tories.

The party is mounting a billboard campaign in three cities this week attacking the Conservative government’s move to scrap the long-gun registry. But now they’re rushing to change the graphics before the billboards go up.

Smoking Does Not Cause Lung Cancer

November 25, 2011

Yes, it is true, smoking does not cause lung cancer.  It is only one of many risk factors for lung cancer. I initially was going to write an article on how the professional literature and publications misuse the language by saying “smoking causes lung cancer”1,2, but the more that I looked into how biased the literature, professional organizations, and the media are, I modified this article to one on trying to put the relationship between smoking and cancer into perspective. (No, I did not get paid off by the tobacco companies, or anything else like that.)

When the tobacco executives testified to Congress that they did not believe that smoking caused cancer, their answers were probably truthful and I agree with that statement. Now, if they were asked if smoking increases the risk of getting lung cancer, then their answer based upon current evidence should have be “yes.”  But even so, the risk of a smoker getting lung cancer is much less than anyone would suspect.   Based upon what the media and anti-tobacco organizations say, one would think that if you smoke, you get lung cancer (a 100% correlation) or at least expect a 50+% occurrence before someone uses the word “cause.”

Would you believe that the real number is < 10% (see Appendix A)? Yesa US white male (USWM) cigarette smoker has an 8% lifetime chance of dying from lung cancer but the USWM nonsmoker also has a 1% chance of dying from lung cancer (see Appendix A).  In fact, the data used is biased in the way that it was collected and the actual risk for a smoker is probably less.  I personally would not smoke cigarettes and take that risk, nor recommend cigarette smoking to others, but the numbers were less than I had been led to believe.  I only did the data on white males because they account for the largest number of lung cancers in the US, but a similar analysis can be done for other groups using the CDC data.

You don’t see this type of information being reported, and we hear things like, “if you smoke you will die”, but when we actually look at the data, lung cancer accounts for only 2% of the annual deaths worldwide and only 3% in the US.** (ed: note, roughly 8% in Canada from WHO data)

‘Time has come’ to act on Iran, Israel says

November 21, 2011

The “time has come” to deal with Iran, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Sunday, refusing to rule out military action to curb the Islamic republic’s nuclear ambitions.

Barak, speaking on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS program, indicated that Israel’s patience was wearing thin — and provided an ominous response when asked about the growing speculation of an Israeli military strike.

The sheer ignorance of the anti-gun movement.

November 4, 2011

Anti-gun control freaks: They make cry-baby emotional decisions based on ignorance.  There’s a great bit of debate from the national post to read that illustrated this.  Below are two great quotes:

McParland: But we’re not talking about all guns. I keep asking what the legitimate use is for a sniper’s rifle in modern Canada, since it doesn’t seem to be for killing bears or squirrels, but no one seems to be able to say.

Gurney: A sniper rifle is generally a standard hunting rifle (a Remington 700 or a Winchester 1904 are common examples) with a telescopic sight bored into the top of the receiver. And they are used in hunting. Whether the scope helps or hinders your hunting depends on a lot of factors, such as range, foliage and chosen prey. A rifle with a big honkin’ scope wouldn’t be useful for squirrels, but for bears and larger animals.

McParland above is your classic anti-gun moron.  Has absolutely no idea on the subject, but is desperate to control and regulate it.  They love words like “assualt rifle” and “sniper rifle.”  Then of course, there’s the classic “why do you need that?”

Lorne Gunter: The Liberals tried very, very hard to make the registry work as a method of gun control. It was not merely a political exercise. They went so far are requiring that every registered gun in the country have a unique identifying number. If there wasn’t a serial number stamped on the firearm, a permanent sticker that could never be removed had to be placed on it. Also, much of the $2-billion cost overrun was the result of how thoroughly the Firearms Program checked out potential gun owners and how complicated the computer software was to run all the background checks and firearms sales and transfers. The registry was never just a PR effort.

There’s another point missed in this discussion: the concept of “need” is antithetic to democracy where the citizens are sovereign. No one needs a car that goes more than 110 kms an hours, because that is the highest speed limit in the country. So should any of us who want to drive more than a Smart Car or Fiat have to cap in hand to an “official” and explain our need for something more before we are granted a license for one? Many more Canadians — thousands more — are killed by speeding automobiles each year than by high-powered rifles that are beyond what farmers “need” to kill coyotes.

City may take “action” against protesters disrupting quality of life

November 3, 2011

Mayor Bloomberg struck a tougher tone with the Occupy Wall Street protestors Wednesday – and said the city might be forced to “take actions” at Zuccotti Park.

Bloomberg said the city must listen to the residents and business owners near the protest site who are starting to loudly complain about the demonstrators.

“This isn’t an occupation of Wall Street,” Bloomberg told reporters. “It’s an occupation of a growing, vibrant residential neighborhood in Lower Manhattan and it’s really hurting small businesses and families.”

Occupy Wall Street = Lord of the Flies

October 25, 2011

Back at City Hall, the original Occupy Oakland site has descended into anarchy. After occupiers pepper-sprayed a homeless man and beat him unconscious, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan sent protesters an eviction notice.

Citing an “increasing frequency of violence, assaults, threats and intimidation,” as well as a growing rat problem, the notice decreed, “no tents or overnight camping permitted.”

But Oakland officials have no idea when, or more importantly, how, police will enforce the order. One Oakland police officer told the San Jose Mercury News, that the tent city resembled something from “Lord of the Flies.”

He said it was “interesting for a group that claims to be against current civilization and rules to set up a far more oppressive society than our own.”
